In my continuing series of cricket being mentioned in unexpected places: UK Prime Minister David Cameron watched a basketball game with President Barack Obama during his trip to the U.S. this week. A sportscaster asked Cameron if he understood the rules:
Reporter: Was our president helping you follow the game?
Cameron: He was giving me some tips. He’s going to help me fill out my bracket, so, uh…
Obama: And he’s going to teach me cricket!
Cameron: That’s the deal.
Obama: Because I don’t understand what’s going on with that.
You can watch the exchange here (skip to 1:16). I suspect Obama actually knows plenty about cricket — he’s said in previous interviews that he learned how to cook Indian food thanks to some South Asian Columbia University roommates (who surely must haveĀ talked to him about the game). And, of course, there’s this amazing photo with Brian Lara. Not a bad swing, Mr. President.
